Robert Schneider Preps Robbert Bobbert & the Bubble Machine

For a long while, The Apples in Stereo’s Robert Schneider has been talking about making a children’s album, perhaps inspired by his success writing “Signal in the Sky” for the Powerpuff Girls soundtrack Heroes & Villains. (He also wrote another children’s song, “If You Want to Wear a Hat,” which appeared on the “Signal in the Sky” EP, Let’s Go!, and even made a cartoon cameo with his fellow Apples in one of the Powerpuff Girls episodes, “Superfriends,” in 2002.) Initially he started up a MySpace page for a band to be called Robbert Bobbert and the Bubble Machine. He began performing live with the bubble machine, to wild crowds of enthusiastic kids–see You Ain’t No Picasso’s coverage here of a recent Lexington appearance. And now Robbert Bobbert and the Bubble Machine will finally get a CD proper this coming January. You can hear some of the new tracks on the recently updated MySpace page, and download an MP3 below, “We R Superheroes,” which sounds like it might have been a lost B-side for that Let’s Go! EP. It’s children’s music, but as poppy as the Apples, and pretty fun to listen to even if you’re over four feet tall. The awesome artwork, by the way, is by Adrian Todd Webb, comic book artist who also fronts the band seamonster. When I forwarded a seamonster track called “Robert Schneider’s Abacus” to Robert a while back, by coincidence it just happened to be Robert’s birthday. He quickly enlisted Todd to be the official Robbert Bobbert cartoonist: “I believe strongly in synchronicity!” You can see more of the Robbert Bobbert art at the band’s MySpace, and Todd’s portfolio at his website. Although a label and track listing have yet to be announced, you can expect to turn your kids or nephews onto Elephant 6 this coming January. (So, when will we see that Marbles Christmas album that Robert’s been promising for a while now?)
